Nervous System Functions Station Lab - New TEKS7.13A

This student-led, modular station lab supports the 2021 TEKS 7.13A standard by helping middle school students identify and model the main functions of the nervous system. Students rotate through multimodal stations that combine demonstrations, videos, reading passages, and research with hands-on and creative activities. Teachers facilitate learning rather than direct it, giving students ownership of their work while saving prep time.

Structure & Differentiation

• Nine total stations: eight differentiated core activities plus one enrichment station for early finishers

• Differentiated to support diverse learners—scaffolded readings and tasks for remediation, enrichment activities for advanced students

• Includes station signage, task cards, readings, and resources for independent or small group work

• The Explore It! station may require a few simple classroom supplies already available in most labs

Station Breakdown

Input Stations (building knowledge):

• Explore It! – Hands-on demonstration; digital version includes interactive activities in PowerPoint or Google Slides

• Watch It! – Short video with comprehension questions

• Read It! – Differentiated passages (English & Spanish) with vocabulary and comprehension checks

• Research It! – Facts, images, and graphs paired with guided student questions

Output Stations (demonstrating knowledge):

• Organize It! – Sorting and categorization with manipulatives or digital tools

• Illustrate It! – Sketching/drawing nervous system models to reinforce retention

• Write It! – Short-answer prompts requiring complete sentences

• Assess It! – Task cards and vocabulary-in-context exercises to check mastery

Bonus Station:

• Challenge It! – Crosswords, puzzles, games, and mini-projects for early finishers or advanced learners

Flexible Implementation

This station lab is designed for both in-class and virtual learning. All files are compatible with PowerPoint and Google Slides, making them easy to integrate into blended or online classrooms.
