This project-based lesson allows middle school students to demonstrate their understanding of the nervous system through student-directed projects. A choice board outlines six structured project options plus a “design your own” pathway, giving students the flexibility to show their learning in the format that best fits their strengths, creativity, and interests.

An editable grading rubric is included and can be used for teacher assessment, peer review, or self-assessment. Teachers can also customize the rubric to align with their classroom or district grading policies.

What’s Included

  • Choice Board: Nine student project options, including a “design your own” project

  • Teacher Directions Page: Tips and suggestions to support smooth classroom implementation

  • Editable Rubrics: Evaluate vocabulary, concepts, clarity, presentation, and accuracy

Differentiation

Two versions of the project page are included to meet the needs of all learners:

  • Modified Version: Three scaffolded project options designed to assist students who need remediation or additional support

  • Challenge Opportunities: Advanced learners may be assigned multiple projects while still being graded with the same rubric for consistency

This ensures that all students can access and engage with the content at an appropriate level.

Supplies Needed

Projects are designed for use with basic classroom supplies such as paper, markers, and scissors. Many projects can also be completed digitally, while optional craft supplies may be incorporated for hands-on model-building and other creative tasks.
