Keep your middle school students engaged, curious, and learning with this modular, student-led activity on atoms and chemical formulas, aligned with TEKS 2021 standard 7.6B.
This ready-to-use, low-prep resource saves you hours of planning while allowing students to take ownership of their learning through exploration, collaboration, and critical thinking.

In this interactive station lab, students will use the periodic table to identify the types and numbers of atoms within a chemical formula—a key skill for mastering chemistry fundamentals.
Perfect for both in-person and virtual classrooms, this flexible resource makes it easy to teach essential physical science concepts in a fun, hands-on way.

Differentiated, Modular, and Student-Led

Each station lab includes nine differentiated activities that allow students to create a personalized learning experience.
In this student-centered approach, teachers act as facilitators—guiding learning while students work independently or in small groups to explore the content.

The nine modular stations include all signage, readings, resources, and task cards so students can complete activities confidently and independently.
The Explore It! station may require a few common classroom materials you likely already have in your science lab.

The Stations

Input Stations – Learn and Explore

Students encounter new chemistry concepts through multiple learning modalities that make abstract ideas concrete.

  • Explore It! – Hands-on activity or demonstration that connects new information through real-world application. In the digital version, students manipulate images and text in PowerPoint or Google Slides.

  • Watch It! – Students watch a short video and answer guided questions about atoms and chemical formulas.

  • Read It! – Short, engaging reading passage with comprehension and vocabulary questions. Differentiated versions are available in English and Spanish to support all learners.

  • Research It! – Students analyze facts, images, and graphs to build connections between the periodic table and chemical formulas, completing guided questions on their lab sheet.

Output Stations – Apply and Demonstrate Understanding

Students show what they’ve learned in creative and analytical ways, reinforcing comprehension and retention.

  • Organize It! – Work hands-on with manipulatives or digital drag-and-drop tools to categorize and organize information.

  • Illustrate It! – Draw or model atoms and chemical formulas to visualize concepts and strengthen recall.

  • Write It! – Respond to short-answer prompts using academic vocabulary and complete sentences.

  • Assess It! – Demonstrate mastery through a series of task cards and a vocabulary-in-context paragraph.

Bonus Station – Challenge It!

Perfect for early finishers or advanced learners, this station provides engaging extension activities like crossword puzzles, mini-projects, and educational games to deepen understanding and keep students motivated.
