Keep your middle school students engaged, curious, and learning with this modular, student-led activity on atoms.
This ready-to-use resource will save you hours of prep time while allowing students to take the lead in discovering the structure of atoms and understanding that protons determine an element’s identity.

This station lab is also included in the Atoms 5E Lesson Plan, which features teaching and virtual learning presentations, interactive notebook activities, note templates, student projects, assessments, and more—everything you need for a complete middle school chemistry unit.

Texas Teachers: This station lab aligns with the 2017 TEKS and will not be updated for the 2021 standards.

Differentiated, Modular, and Student-Led

Each station lab includes eight differentiated activities that create a personalized learning experience for every student, plus a ninth Challenge Station for early finishers.
With this student-centered approach, the teacher guides learning while students collaborate, explore, and discover independently.

The nine modular stations include all signage, readings, task cards, and resources students need to complete activities on their own or in small groups.
The Explore It! station may require a few common classroom materials you likely already have available.

Ready for In-Class or Virtual Learning

This lab is designed for maximum flexibility and can be completed in person or online.
All materials are compatible with PowerPoint and Google Slides, making it easy to implement in any learning environment.

The Stations

Input Stations – Learn and Explore

Students encounter atomic structure concepts through a variety of multimodal learning experiences.

  • Explore It! – Hands-on demonstration that connects theory to real-world application. In the digital version, students manipulate images and text using PowerPoint or Google Slides.

  • Read It! – Students read a short passage about atoms and answer comprehension and vocabulary questions. Differentiated passages are provided in English and Spanish for multiple reading levels.

  • Research It! – Students use a website to explore facts and visuals about atoms, then complete guided tasks and questions on their lab sheets.

  • Watch It! – Students watch a short video and answer discussion questions to reinforce understanding.

Output Stations – Apply and Demonstrate Understanding

Students show what they’ve learned through creative, written, and hands-on activities.

  • Organize It! – Sort and classify information with manipulatives or digital drag-and-drop tools.

  • Illustrate It! – Draw models of atoms and subatomic particles to strengthen recall and visual comprehension.

  • Write It! – Respond to open-ended questions using scientific vocabulary and complete sentences.

  • Assess It! – Demonstrate mastery through task cards and short written responses that use vocabulary in context.

Bonus Station – Challenge It!

Perfect for early finishers and advanced learners, this extension station includes crossword puzzles, mini-projects, and educational games that reinforce key atomic concepts while keeping students motivated and challenged.
