Keep your middle school students engaged, curious, and learning with this modular, student-led activity on pure substances and mixtures, aligned with TEKS 2021 standard 6.6B.
This ready-to-use, differentiated resource saves you hours of prep time while giving students the opportunity to take ownership of their learning through hands-on, multimodal exploration.

In this station lab, students will investigate the physical properties of matter to distinguish between pure substances, homogeneous mixtures (solutions), and heterogeneous mixtures.
Perfect for in-class or virtual learning, this flexible, inquiry-based lesson is designed to deepen student understanding through collaboration and critical thinking.

Differentiated, Modular, and Student-Led

Each station lab includes nine differentiated activities that help students create a personalized learning experience.
In this student-centered model, the teacher acts as a facilitator, guiding students as they work independently or in small groups to discover key chemistry concepts.

The nine modular stations include all signage, reading passages, resources, and task cards needed for seamless implementation.
The Explore It! station may require a few common classroom materials you likely already have in your lab.

Ready for In-Class or Virtual Learning

This resource is designed for maximum flexibility and can easily be used in traditional, blended, or digital classrooms.
All materials are fully compatible with PowerPoint and Google Slides, making it simple to assign, display, and track student progress in any format.

The Stations

Input Stations – Learn and Explore

Students encounter new concepts about pure substances and mixtures through multiple learning modalities that promote active engagement.

  • Explore It! – A hands-on demonstration or activity that connects lesson content through application. In the digital version, students manipulate images and text in PowerPoint or Google Slides.

  • Watch It! – Students watch a short video about classifying matter and answer comprehension questions to reinforce learning.

  • Read It! – Students read a short passage and answer vocabulary and comprehension questions. Differentiated passages in English and Spanish are included for multiple reading levels.

  • Research It! – Students explore visuals, graphs, and online resources to connect new information about pure substances and mixtures to real-world examples.

Output Stations – Apply and Demonstrate Understanding

Students demonstrate and extend their learning through creative, analytical, and written tasks that strengthen understanding.

  • Organize It! – Sort and classify examples of pure substances and mixtures using manipulatives or digital drag-and-drop tools.

  • Illustrate It! – Sketch or diagram models showing how matter can be classified based on physical properties.

  • Write It! – Respond to short-answer prompts using academic vocabulary and complete sentences.

  • Assess It! – Demonstrate mastery through task cards and written reflections using key lesson vocabulary.

Bonus Station – Challenge It!

Perfect for early finishers and advanced learners, this extension station includes crosswords, mini-projects, and interactive games that reinforce concepts and promote higher-order thinking.
