Keep your middle school students engaged, curious, and actively learning with this modular, student-led activity on matter and kinetic energy, aligned with TEKS 2021 standard 6.6A.
This ready-to-use, low-prep resource saves you hours of planning time while allowing students to take ownership of their learning through inquiry-based exploration and collaboration.

In this station lab, students will compare solids, liquids, and gases in terms of their structure, shape, volume, and the kinetic energy of their atoms and molecules.
Perfect for in-class or virtual learning, this flexible, differentiated activity supports multiple learning styles and keeps students actively engaged in exploring how matter behaves at the particle level.

Differentiated, Modular, and Student-Led

Each station lab features nine differentiated activities that help students create a personalized learning experience tailored to their needs.
In this student-centered approach, the teacher acts as a facilitator, guiding learning rather than directing it.

All nine modular stations include signage, reading materials, resources, and task cards for students to work independently or in small groups.
The Explore It! station may require a few common classroom materials already available in your lab.

Ready for In-Class or Virtual Learning

This resource is designed for maximum flexibility.
Students can complete all activities on campus or online, and all files are fully compatible with PowerPoint and Google Slides for easy digital integration.

The Stations

Input Stations – Learn and Explore

Students discover new concepts about matter and kinetic energy through engaging, multimodal learning experiences.

  • Explore It! – Hands-on demo or activity that connects science concepts through real-world applications. In the digital version, students manipulate images and text in PowerPoint or Google Slides.

  • Watch It! – Short, engaging video followed by comprehension questions that deepen understanding.

  • Read It! – Short reading passage with vocabulary and comprehension questions. Differentiated versions are included in English and Spanish for readers of all levels.

  • Research It! – Guided web-based investigation using visuals, graphs, and data to make connections about matter and energy.

Output Stations – Apply and Demonstrate Understanding

Students show what they’ve learned through a variety of creative, analytical, and written activities.

  • Organize It! – Sort and classify examples of solids, liquids, and gases using manipulatives or digital tools.

  • Illustrate It! – Draw or model particle arrangements and motion to reinforce visual understanding.

  • Write It! – Respond to open-ended prompts using complete sentences and academic vocabulary.

  • Assess It! – Apply knowledge through task cards and short written responses that use vocabulary in context.

Bonus Station – Challenge It!

Perfect for early finishers and advanced learners, this enrichment station includes crossword puzzles, games, and mini-projects that extend learning and reinforce understanding of matter and kinetic energy.
