Topographic Maps - Student Choice Projects - MS

This project-based lesson gives middle school students the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of topographic maps through student-directed projects. A choice board provides six project options plus a “design your own” pathway, giving learners the flexibility to select the format that best matches their skills, interests, and creativity.

An editable grading rubric is included and may be used by teachers, peers, or the students themselves. The rubric can be customized to align with classroom or district requirements.

Differentiation

Two versions of the project page are provided:

• Challenge Opportunities: Teachers may assign multiple projects for advanced learners while still using the same rubric for consistency

This structure ensures the projects can be adapted for a variety of student needs.

Supplies Needed

Projects are designed for completion using standard classroom supplies such as paper, markers, and scissors. Many projects can also be completed digitally, while optional craft supplies may be used to enhance hands-on model building.
