Tectonics & Geological Events Station Lab New TEKS 7.10B

This student-led, modular station lab helps middle school students meet the 2021 TEKS 7.10B standard by investigating how plate tectonics cause ocean basin formation, earthquakes, mountain building, and volcanic eruptions—including hot spots and supervolcanoes. Students rotate through multimodal stations that combine hands-on, digital, and written tasks, creating a personalized learning experience. Teachers guide learning as facilitators, giving students ownership of the process.

This resource saves prep time with ready-to-use materials and works seamlessly in both in-person and virtual learning environments.

Structure & Differentiation

• Nine total stations: eight core activities plus a challenge station for enrichment

• Differentiated to support a range of learners—scaffolds for remediation and extensions for advanced students

• Includes station signage, task cards, readings, and resources for independent or small-group learning

• The Explore It! station may require a few simple materials already available in most classrooms

Station Breakdown

Input Stations (building knowledge):

• Explore It! – Hands-on demonstration; digital version includes drag-and-drop activities in PowerPoint or Google Slides

• Watch It! – Short video with comprehension questions

• Read It! – Differentiated passages (English & Spanish) with vocabulary and comprehension checks

• Research It! – Facts, images, and graphs paired with guided lab sheet questions

Output Stations (demonstrating knowledge):

• Organize It! – Sorting and categorization activities using manipulatives or digital tools

• Illustrate It! – Drawing/sketching models of tectonic and geological events to reinforce understanding

• Write It! – Short-answer prompts requiring complete-sentence responses

• Assess It! – Task cards and vocabulary-in-context exercises to measure mastery

Bonus Station:

• Challenge It! – Enrichment activities such as crosswords, games, and mini-projects for early finishers or advanced learners

Flexible Implementation

This lab is fully adaptable for in-class or virtual instruction. All files are compatible with PowerPoint and Google Slides, making them simple to use in traditional, blended, or online settings.
