Fossils - Student Choice Projects - MS

This project-based lesson gives middle school students the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of fossils through student-directed projects. A choice board provides six structured project options plus a “design your own” pathway, encouraging students to choose the format that best fits their learning style and interests.

An editable grading rubric is included, which can be used by teachers, peers, or the students themselves. The rubric can be modified to align with classroom or district grading requirements.

Differentiation

Two versions of the project page are provided:

• Modified Version: Three options are scaffolded for students who need additional support or remediation

• Extension Opportunities: Advanced students may be assigned multiple projects while still using the same rubric for evaluation consistency

This structure makes it easy to tailor the projects to the needs of all learners.

Supplies Needed

Projects are designed to be completed with standard classroom materials such as paper, scissors, and markers. Many can also be completed digitally. Optional craft supplies may be helpful for students who choose to create models.
