Print & Digital

This lesson gives middle school students the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of the density of irregular-shaped objects through projects tailored to their individual learning styles. A choice board outlines six project options plus a “design your own” pathway, giving students ownership of how they present their knowledge.

A flexible grading rubric is included and can be used for teacher assessment, peer review, or student self-assessment. The rubric is fully editable, allowing teachers to adapt it to fit their classroom needs.

What’s Included

  • Choice Board: Nine project options, including “design your own”

  • Teacher Directions Page: Guidance, tips, and support for implementation

  • Editable Rubrics: Evaluate vocabulary, concepts, clarity, presentation, and accuracy

Differentiation

Two versions of the project page are provided:

  • Modified Version: Three options are adjusted to provide additional scaffolding and support for students who need it

  • Challenge Pathways: Advanced learners can complete multiple projects while still being evaluated with the same rubric

This design makes it easy to accommodate a range of student abilities while keeping grading consistent.

Supplies Needed

Projects are designed to be completed with standard classroom materials such as paper, markers, and scissors. Many options can also be done digitally, and optional crafting supplies can be used for building models or more hands-on projects.

Bundle Options

  • Earth Science Bundle (Grades 6–8): Covers 14 topics

  • MEGA Student Choice Project Bundle (Grades 6–8): Includes 93 topics across Earth Science and related content
