Energy of Waves Station Lab - New TEKS 6.8C

This student-led, modular station lab helps middle school students meet the 2021 TEKS 6.8C standard by exploring how energy is transferred through transverse and longitudinal waves. Students rotate through a variety of input and output stations that combine hands-on, digital, and written activities, creating a personalized and engaging learning experience. Teachers serve as facilitators, allowing students to take ownership of their learning.

Structure & Differentiation

• Nine total stations: eight core activities plus one enrichment station for early finishers

• Differentiated to support a wide range of learners—scaffolded tasks for remediation and extensions for advanced students

• Includes station signage, task cards, readings, and resources for flexible implementation

• The Explore It! station may require a few simple classroom supplies already on hand

Station Breakdown

Input Stations (building knowledge):

• Explore It! – Hands-on demonstration; digital version includes interactive drag-and-drop activities in PowerPoint or Google Slides

• Watch It! – Short video with guided questions

• Read It! – Differentiated passages (English & Spanish) with vocabulary and comprehension tasks

• Research It! – Facts, images, and graphs paired with structured lab sheet questions

Output Stations (demonstrating knowledge):

• Organize It! – Categorization and card sort activities (printable or digital)

• Illustrate It! – Drawing/sketching models of wave energy to reinforce understanding

• Write It! – Short-answer prompts requiring complete-sentence responses

• Assess It! – Task cards and vocabulary-in-context activities to check mastery

Bonus Station:

• Challenge It! – Extension activities such as puzzles, games, crosswords, and mini-projects for early finishers or advanced learners

Flexible Implementation

This lab is designed for both in-person and virtual instruction. All files are compatible with PowerPoint and Google Slides, making it easy to adapt for blended or online classrooms.
