This project-based lesson allows middle school students to demonstrate their understanding of heat transfer through conduction, convection, and radiation using student-directed projects. A choice board outlines six structured project options plus a “design your own” pathway, giving learners the flexibility to present their knowledge in the format that best fits their learning style and creativity.

An editable grading rubric is included and can be used for teacher assessment, peer review, or self-assessment. The rubric can also be customized to match classroom or district grading needs.

What’s Included

  • Choice Board: Nine project options, including a “design your own” project

  • Teacher Directions Page: Guidance, suggestions, and implementation support

  • Editable Rubrics: Evaluate vocabulary, concepts, presentation, clarity, and accuracy

Differentiation

Two versions of the project page are provided to support a range of student needs:

  • Modified Version: Three project options are scaffolded to help students needing remediation or additional support

  • Challenge Opportunities: Teachers can assign multiple projects for advanced learners, with consistent grading through the same rubric

This design ensures flexibility to meet learners where they are while still maintaining rigorous expectations.

Supplies Needed

Projects are designed to be completed with standard classroom supplies such as paper, markers, and scissors. Many can also be completed digitally, while optional craft supplies may enhance model-building or creative project designs.
