Urinary System Functions - Student Choice Projects, MS, New TEKS 7.13A

This student-led, modular station lab supports the 2021 TEKS 7.13A standard by helping middle school students identify and model the main functions of the urinary system. Students will explore how the kidneys, bladder, and related organs work to filter blood, remove waste, and maintain fluid balance. With multimodal input and output stations, the lab engages students in hands-on, visual, and written activities while teachers act as facilitators, making this a low-prep, high-impact lesson.

Structure & Differentiation

• Nine total stations: eight core activities plus one enrichment station for early finishers

• Differentiated to meet diverse needs—scaffolded readings and tasks for remediation, extension activities for advanced learners

• Includes station signage, task cards, readings, and resources for independent or small-group learning

• The Explore It! station may require a few classroom materials you likely already have on hand

Station Breakdown

Input Stations (building knowledge):

• Explore It! – Hands-on demonstration; digital version allows interactive elements in PowerPoint or Google Slides

• Watch It! – Short video with comprehension questions

• Read It! – Differentiated passages (English & Spanish) with vocabulary and comprehension checks

• Research It! – Facts, images, and graphs paired with structured student questions

Output Stations (demonstrating knowledge):

• Organize It! – Sorting and categorization activities with manipulatives or digital tools

• Illustrate It! – Drawing/sketching urinary system models to reinforce understanding

• Write It! – Short-answer prompts requiring complete sentences

• Assess It! – Task cards and vocabulary-in-context exercises to check mastery

Bonus Station:

• Challenge It! – Enrichment activities like crosswords, puzzles, games, and mini-projects for advanced learners or early finishers

Flexible Implementation

This station lab is fully adaptable for in-class or virtual learning. Files are compatible with PowerPoint and Google Slides, making it easy to integrate into blended or online classrooms.
