List of Kit Materials and DIY Replacement Recipes

To give you the easiest and fastest prep, some of the demos refer to materials sold in kits. Kesler Science does not get any benefit from the sale of these kits, and there are many ways to replace these materials on your own.

  • Sound Tubes and Glow-in-the-Dark copy paper are best purchased rather than made.
  • “Atomic” Materials: While it may not be as consistent as the purchased kit, you can replace the fluorescence of this material with the dye fluorescein or by soaking the core of a neon yellow highlighter in the liquid ingredients of a recipe in advance.
  • Boo Bubble Generator: Cut off the top of a two-liter bottle and cover it with a large funnel connected to rubber tubing. Be careful as this will be less stable than the purchased kit, and the sides will get very cold!
  • Cross-linking Solution: 1 cup warm water + 1 tablespoon sodium tetraborate (Borax)
  • Glow Powder: zinc sulfide
  • Slime Solution: 4% polyvinyl alcohol
  • Worm Activator: 5g calcium chloride + 100 mL distilled water
  • Worm Solution: 2g sodium alginate + 100 mL distilled water
