Fossils Station Lab - MS

This student-led, modular station lab engages middle school learners in exploring fossils and constructing scientific explanations using evidence from rock strata. Students rotate through multimodal activities that blend hands-on, digital, and written tasks, giving them multiple pathways to build understanding while taking ownership of their learning.

The resource is designed to save teachers time with ready-to-use materials while encouraging student independence. Teachers act as facilitators, guiding learning instead of directing every step.

Note for Texas teachers: This resource aligns with the 2017 TEKS and will not be updated for the 2021 standards.

Structure & Differentiation

• Nine total stations: eight core activities plus one challenge station for enrichment or early finishers

• Differentiated design supports a range of student abilities, from remediation to extension

• Includes all station signage, task cards, readings, and resources for smooth setup

• The Explore It! station may require a few simple supplies typically available in most classrooms

Students can complete the lab independently or in small groups, giving teachers flexibility in classroom management.

Station Breakdown

Input Stations (building knowledge):

• Explore It! – Hands-on demonstration (digital version includes drag-and-drop in PowerPoint or Google Slides)

• Read It! – Differentiated passages (English & Spanish) with comprehension and vocabulary tasks

• Research It! – Structured web-based activity with follow-up questions

• Watch It! – Short video with guided reflection

Output Stations (showing knowledge):

• Organize It! – Categorization and card sort activities (printable and digital formats)

• Illustrate It! – Drawing/sketching fossil models to reinforce retention

• Write It! – Short-answer responses requiring complete sentences

• Assess It! – Task cards and vocabulary-in-context exercises to check mastery

Bonus Station:

• Challenge It! – Extension tasks such as puzzles, crosswords, games, and mini-projects for early finishers or advanced learners

Flexible Implementation

This lab is designed for both in-class and virtual learning. All files are compatible with PowerPoint and Google Slides, making it easy to adapt across different teaching environments.
