This modular, student-led activity about organism relationships will keep your middle school students engaged and learning throughout this ecosystems lesson. These comprehensive materials save you hours of prep while empowering students to take ownership of their learning.

In this station lab, students will identify and compare the characteristics of different organism relationships.

The station lab activities are also included in the Organism Relationships 5E Lesson Plan, which features teaching and virtual learning presentations, note templates, interactive notebook activities, student projects, assessments, engagement activities, and more — perfect for your middle school science curriculum.

Texas teachers: This station lab aligns with the 2017 TEKS and will not be updated for the 2021 TEKS.

DIFFERENTIATED, MODULAR, STUDENT-LED

Each station lab includes eight differentiated core activities and one bonus challenge station for early finishers. In this student-centered structure, the teacher facilitates rather than directs, allowing students to explore content at their own pace.

The nine modular stations include all signage, readings, resources, and task cards for students to complete independently or in small groups. The Explore It! station may require a few basic materials you likely already have on hand.

Ready for both in-class and virtual learning — all files are compatible with PowerPoint and Google Slides.

THE STATIONS

INPUT Stations – Build Understanding

These stations introduce and explore new concepts about organism relationships through multiple modalities.

  • Explore It! – Hands-on demonstration or simulation activity. In the digital version, students manipulate images and text in PowerPoint or Google Slides.

  • Read It! – Students read a short passage about organism relationships and answer comprehension and vocabulary questions. Differentiated passages available in English and Spanish.

  • Research It! – Students use an online resource to collect facts, images, and data. They complete guided tasks and questions on their lab sheets.

  • Watch It! – Students view a short video and respond to comprehension questions about organism relationships.

OUTPUT Stations – Show Understanding

Students demonstrate mastery and apply their knowledge in creative, written, and analytical ways.

  • Organize It! – Students complete hands-on categorization tasks using printable or digital manipulatives.

  • Illustrate It! – Students draw or diagram models showing different types of organism relationships.

  • Write It! – Students answer open-ended prompts, explaining their understanding using complete sentences.

  • Assess It! – Students respond to task cards and complete a short written summary using vocabulary in context.

BONUS STATION – Challenge It!

Early finishers and advanced learners can extend their learning with fun, high-level activities such as crosswords, games, or mini-projects.

This is a finished product; it will be updated with formatting or corrections as needed. Future improvements and new features will be sold as a separate product.
