Energy Transformations Station Lab - MS

This student-led, modular station lab engages middle school learners in investigating energy transformations. Students will determine relationships between energy transferred, mass, type of matter, and kinetic energy as they rotate through multimodal input and output stations. With a differentiated structure, the lab allows students to direct their own learning while teachers guide as facilitators.

Structure & Differentiation

• Nine stations total: eight core activities plus one enrichment station for early finishers

• Differentiated design supports a wide range of learners, with scaffolds for remediation and extensions for advanced students

• Includes station signage, task cards, readings, and resources for independent or small-group use

• The Explore It! station may require a few common classroom materials already on hand

Station Breakdown

Input Stations (building knowledge):

• Explore It! – Hands-on demonstration; digital version includes interactive elements in PowerPoint or Google Slides

• Read It! – Differentiated passages (English & Spanish) with vocabulary and comprehension checks

• Research It! – Web-based activity with structured tasks and lab sheet responses

• Watch It! – Short video with guided questions

Output Stations (demonstrating knowledge):

• Organize It! – Categorization and card sort activities using manipulatives or digital resources

• Illustrate It! – Drawing/sketching models to represent energy transformations

• Write It! – Short-answer prompts requiring complete-sentence responses

• Assess It! – Task cards and vocabulary-in-context activities to measure mastery

Bonus Station:

• Challenge It! – Enrichment tasks such as puzzles, crosswords, games, and mini-projects for advanced learners or early finishers

Flexible Implementation

This lab is fully adaptable for both in-class and virtual learning. Files are compatible with PowerPoint and Google Slides, making them easy to use in traditional, blended, or online classrooms.
