Excretory System Station Lab - MS

This student-led, modular station lab engages middle school students in identifying the main parts of the excretory system and describing how the system functions to remove waste from the body. Students rotate through multimodal input and output stations that combine reading, research, video, and hands-on demonstrations, providing a personalized learning experience. Teachers act as facilitators, making this a low-prep, high-engagement lesson for body systems instruction.

Structure & Differentiation

• Nine total stations: eight differentiated activities plus one challenge station for enrichment or early finishers

• Differentiated to support a wide range of learners—scaffolded passages and tasks for remediation, enrichment activities for advanced students

• Includes station signage, task cards, readings, and resources for smooth setup and independent or group learning

• The Explore It! station may require a few simple classroom supplies you likely already have on hand

Station Breakdown

Input Stations (building knowledge):

• Explore It! – Hands-on demonstration; digital version includes interactive elements in PowerPoint or Google Slides

• Read It! – Differentiated passages (English & Spanish) with vocabulary and comprehension checks

• Research It! – Web-based activity with images, facts, and graphs paired with structured student questions

• Watch It! – Short video with comprehension prompts

Output Stations (demonstrating knowledge):

• Organize It! – Sorting and categorization activities with manipulatives or digital versions

• Illustrate It! – Drawing/sketching models of the excretory system to reinforce understanding

• Write It! – Short-answer prompts requiring complete sentences

• Assess It! – Task cards and vocabulary-in-context exercises to demonstrate mastery

Bonus Station:

• Challenge It! – Crosswords, puzzles, games, and mini-projects for advanced learners and early finishers

Flexible Implementation

This lab is fully adaptable for in-person and virtual learning. All files are compatible with PowerPoint and Google Slides, making them simple to integrate into blended or online classrooms.
