Digestive System Station Lab - MS

This student-led, modular station lab engages middle school students in exploring the functions of the digestive system and its major organs. Students learn how the digestive system processes food and supports the body by rotating through multimodal input and output stations. Teachers act as facilitators, allowing students to direct their own learning while reducing prep time.

Note for Texas teachers: This resource aligns with the 2017 TEKS and will not be updated for the 2021 standards.

Structure & Differentiation

• Nine total stations: eight differentiated activities plus one challenge station for enrichment or early finishers

• Differentiated to meet a variety of learner needs—scaffolded passages and tasks support remediation while advanced students are offered enrichment opportunities

• Includes station signage, task cards, readings, and resources for smooth setup and classroom use

• The Explore It! station may require a few basic classroom supplies already available in most labs

Station Breakdown

Input Stations (building knowledge):

• Explore It! – Hands-on demonstration; digital version allows interactive practice in PowerPoint or Google Slides

• Read It! – Differentiated passages (English & Spanish) with vocabulary and comprehension checks

• Research It! – Guided online activity with facts, images, and structured student questions

• Watch It! – Short video with comprehension prompts

Output Stations (demonstrating knowledge):

• Organize It! – Sorting and categorization with manipulatives or digital activities

• Illustrate It! – Drawing/sketching models of the digestive system to reinforce retention

• Write It! – Short-answer prompts requiring complete sentences

• Assess It! – Task cards and vocabulary-in-context questions to demonstrate mastery

Bonus Station:

• Challenge It! – Crosswords, puzzles, games, and mini-projects for enrichment or early finishers

Flexible Implementation

This lab is fully adaptable for in-person and virtual learning. All files are compatible with PowerPoint and Google Slides, making them simple to integrate into blended or online classrooms.
