This project-based lesson helps middle school students explore the properties of minerals while meeting learning goals through student-directed projects. A choice board provides six structured project options plus a “design your own” pathway, giving students the opportunity to select the format that best matches their skills and interests.

An editable grading rubric is included and can be used for teacher assessment, peer evaluation, or student self-assessment. Teachers may also customize the rubric to match specific classroom or district grading needs.

What’s Included

  • Choice Board: Nine student project options, including a “design your own” project

  • Teacher Directions Page: Guidance, support, and suggestions for implementation

  • Editable Rubrics: Evaluate vocabulary, content, clarity, presentation, and accuracy

Differentiation

Two versions of the project page are provided to support diverse learning needs:

  • Modified Version: Three project options are scaffolded to provide additional support for students who need remediation

  • Challenge Pathways: Teachers can assign multiple projects to advanced learners while still using the same rubric

This structure ensures flexibility and allows teachers to adapt the resource for a wide range of learners.

Supplies Needed

Projects are designed for completion with standard classroom supplies such as paper, markers, and scissors. Many projects can also be completed digitally, and optional craft supplies may be used for building physical models.
