Print & Digital

This project-based lesson gives middle school students the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of Earth’s layers through student-directed work. A choice board provides six project options plus a “design your own” option, encouraging learners to select the format that best fits their skills and interests.

An editable grading rubric is included and can be applied by teachers, peers, or students for self-assessment. The rubric can be easily adjusted to match individual classroom or grading needs.

What’s Included

  • Choice Board: Nine project options, including “design your own”

  • Teacher Directions Page: Guidance, ideas, and support for implementation

  • Editable Rubrics: Evaluate vocabulary, concepts, presentation, clarity, and accuracy

Differentiation

Two versions of the project page are provided:

  • Modified Version: Three project options are scaffolded to support students who need extra help or remediation

  • Extension Opportunities: Teachers can assign multiple projects for advanced learners while maintaining consistent evaluation with the same rubric

This flexible structure makes it easy to adapt the projects for a variety of student needs.

Supplies Needed

Projects are designed to be completed with basic classroom materials such as paper, markers, and scissors. Many options can also be completed digitally. For hands-on model-building, optional craft supplies may be helpful.
