This project-based lesson gives middle school students the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of visible light through student-directed projects. A choice board presents six structured project options plus a “design your own” pathway, encouraging learners to showcase their knowledge in the format that best fits their skills, interests, and creativity.

An editable grading rubric is included and can be used for teacher assessment, peer feedback, or student self-assessment. The rubric is fully customizable, making it easy to align with classroom or district expectations.

What’s Included

  • Choice Board: Nine student project options, including a “design your own” project

  • Teacher Directions Page: Support and guidance for implementation

  • Editable Rubrics: Assess vocabulary, concepts, presentation, clarity, and accuracy

Differentiation

Two versions of the project page are provided to support a variety of learners:

  • Modified Version: Three project options are scaffolded to assist students who need additional support

  • Challenge Opportunities: Advanced learners may be assigned multiple projects, with the same rubric used for consistency

This design ensures the activity can be adapted to meet the needs of all students in one classroom.

Supplies Needed

Projects are designed for completion with basic classroom materials such as paper, markers, and scissors. Many can also be completed digitally, while optional craft supplies may be used to support model-building or other hands-on activities.
