Digestive System Functions Station Lab New TEKS 7.13A

This student-led, modular station lab supports the 2021 TEKS 7.13A standard by engaging middle school students in learning to identify and model the main functions of the digestive system. Students rotate through multimodal input and output stations that combine reading, research, video, and hands-on practice, creating a personalized and engaging learning experience. Teachers guide and facilitate, making this a low-prep but high-impact resource for life science instruction.

Structure & Differentiation

• Nine stations total: eight differentiated activities plus one challenge station for enrichment or early finishers

• Differentiated to support all learners—scaffolded resources for remediation and enrichment opportunities for advanced students

• Includes station signage, readings, task cards, and resources for smooth classroom setup

• The Explore It! station may require a few simple materials already available in most labs

Station Breakdown

Input Stations (building knowledge):

• Explore It! – Hands-on demonstration; digital version includes interactive activities in PowerPoint or Google Slides

• Watch It! – Short video with comprehension questions

• Read It! – Differentiated passages (English & Spanish) with vocabulary and comprehension checks

• Research It! – Facts, images, and graphs paired with structured student tasks

Output Stations (demonstrating knowledge):

• Organize It! – Sorting and categorization with manipulatives or digital formats

• Illustrate It! – Drawing/sketching models of the digestive system to reinforce understanding

• Write It! – Short-answer prompts requiring complete sentences

• Assess It! – Task cards and vocabulary-in-context questions to demonstrate mastery

Bonus Station:

• Challenge It! – Crosswords, puzzles, mini-projects, and games for early finishers or advanced learners

Flexible Implementation

This lab is fully adaptable for in-class and virtual learning. All files are compatible with PowerPoint and Google Slides, making them easy to use in blended or online classrooms.
